An Introduction to Shooting
[DRAFT PAGE FROM AUTHOR-POSTED COMMENT]
The important thing to note here is that it's not magic.
I don't think you need to get into the physics of it but you should learn the elements of shooting and then practice techniques. There's wind-up/chambering, different trajectories resulting from the combinations of the different ball-impact and foot-impact locations, with moderators based on follow-through.
Our goal is to learn (read: internalize) what happens when a particular part of the foot hits a particular part of the ball and you follow through in a particular way so that its recall is immediate and is application is automatic and to the best of our ability to apply it flawless.
For example, if I want to hit something hard, I might use the technique I mentioned above, but if I want to ensure it doesn't sky inopportunely I might raise the follow-through leg to generate some top spin and keep the ball down or level over long distances.
